New possibilities at Brocken Dynamics: Multi-Material 3D Printing
At Brocken Dynamics, we continue to invest in new technologies to further expand our production capabilities. With the addition of a new multi-material 3D printer, we can now combine different materials and colors within a single 3D print.
This opens up a wealth of new possibilities for both functional technical parts and creative designs.
Different materials, one 3D print
Unlike traditional 3D printers, our new multi-material printer uses separate print heads for different materials. This allows materials with varying properties to be combined within the same production process.
Think, for example, of a sturdy part made of nylon (PA), equipped with integrated flexible zones made of TPU (rubber-like material). This way, we can directly add non-slip surfaces, soft contact points, or flexible elements to a part without needing to produce and glue them separately afterwards.
Flexible hinges, seals, and other functional applications are also among the possibilities. By combining rigid plastics like PLA, ABS, ASA, or nylon with flexible materials like TPU, we can develop parts that unite multiple mechanical properties in a single design.
This offers interesting opportunities for prototypes, custom parts, and small production runs.
In the photo below, you can see a prototype of a bionic finger that was printed entirely in one piece. The structural parts are made of PLA, while the soft padding at the top is made of TPU, just like the internal tendon of the finger. To support the internal structure, a soluble filament is used, which can subsequently be dissolved in water. This ensures that support structures in hard-to-reach places can be removed.

Also Multi-Color 3D Printing
In addition to combining different materials, we can also use multiple colors within a single print.
By printing the same material in different colors, colorful designs with fine details are created, without the need for subsequent painting or additional assembly.
From decorative figures and scale models to functional parts with integrated logos, markings, or color accents: multi-color printing makes it possible to produce designs directly in their final colors.

More design freedom, less assembly
The greatest added value of multi-material 3D printing lies in the ability to combine different functions into a single part.
Where previously multiple parts had to be produced and assembled separately, certain combinations can now be manufactured directly in one printing process.
This can reduce the number of assembly steps, simplify the development process, and create new design freedom.
